In the run up to 2014 Lok Sabha elections, one should definitely expect leaders to charge each other with corruption and one such fight is Anurag Thakur vs Virbhadra Singh. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and BJYM National President Anurag Thakur who is also HP Cricket Association president are playing corruption blame game since a long time which has taken center stage in Himachal Pradesh this year, 2013.
In October 2013, Anurag Thakur and his brother Arun Singh were booked by Vigilance and Anti Corruption Bureau of the state for cheating and conspiracy in a land case. He was also booked for encroachment on government land and demolition of residential houses to construct cricket stadium. Anurag Thakur called the case politically motivated.
Now, BJP has accused HP CM Virbhadra Singh of corruption. Allegedly, Virbhadra Singh took bribe from a private power firm for granting it extension. This allegation came from the highest level in BJP as Arun Jaitley levelled accusations at Virbhadra Singh and his wife of accepting cash from the power company for extension. Virbhadra Singh has come out in his defence by dubbing the allegations as false. Even Congress has supported his position by asking BJP to approach the law-enforcing agencies with concrete proof.
The real reason behind the corruption blame game is actually 2014 Lok Sabha elections which has brought Anurag Thakur Vs Virbhadra Singh fight to light. BJYM President Anurag Thakur is son of Ex-CM, Himachal Pradesh Prem Kumar Dhumal. Anurag Thakur is also a Member of Parliament from Hamirpur. Himachal Pradesh has 4 Lok Sabha seats of which three are with BJP. Virbhadra Singh is quite confident about a bright fate for Congress this Lok Sabha Elections. He also has eyes set on Anurag Thakur’s seat.
The rivalry between Dhumals and Singhs goes back a long time. As it is in most states, Himachal Pradesh politics also has a very strong dynasty angle. While Dhumal’s son Anurag Thakur has already been an MP from the state twice, Virbhadra Singh’s son is way too young. He is currently Himachal Youth Congress President.
BJP has now taken the whole fight to a new level by approaching Rahul Gandhi over corruption charges against Virbhadra Singh. The protests taking place at Rahul Gandhi’s residence signify that either BJP has got strong evidence this time or the heat of elections have successfully powered such a BJP offensive against HP CM Virbhadra Singh.
