Obviously! CAG’s report on 2G scam led to Union minister Raja’s resignation so if a report by CAG indicts Sheila for wrong doings in CWG 2010 then she should meet a similar fate. If it was this simple!
She has been there as CM for consecutively three terms and of course credit goes to her for the way Delhi has transformed in the past years but CAG is the ‘supreme audit institution’ of India and its report holds serious importance. So Sheila Dixit may have been great as a CM but if a body as independent, objective, transparent and reliable indicts her then she should resign from the post until proven innocent.
Report has made some serious observations about her role in the games as CM of Delhi. According to the report, rather then merit of the case, contracts related to various aspects of the games were biased and guided by favoritism. There were clear delays in some projects and penalty has not been yet collected. Street-scaping project has been termed as ill conceived and expenditure of Rs. 100 crores incurred on it as wasteful. The report goes on to point out explicitly that streetlights were imported at much higher prices than fair prices, which cost Rs. 30 crores to the exchequer. Report also pinpoints a detail as minute as unusual use of correction fluid in the tender documents thus indicating unfair manipulation. Report has also accused the government of doing nothing about Kalmadi’s propensity towards appointing people, companies and associates, he favored.
Opposition, free of the Yeddy baggage is now laying its hands on the task of making Congress feel ashamed like never before. Statements have already been issued by BJP people who matter, to the effect of reminding Sheila her moral responsibility and to help her resign as soon as possible. As a matter of fact, in the past Shunglu Committee has also pointed finger at her and it is not wrong for us to expect her to resign because she has set examples in the past and this is one example which would go a long way in making politics seem clean person’s business.
