In politics , no one is a permanent enemy or friend. They are situations that make someone an enemy or a friend. There is also a saying in Hindi that ‘haathi ke daant khane ke aur dikhane ke aur’ means an elephant eats with different teeth and shows different teeth. Both these saying holds true for Bahujan Samajwadi party (BSP) supremo Mayawati. She said that she won’t let BJP leader Narendra Modi become PM and will do everything possible to prevent him from becoming prime minister of India. Her exact words are
“We will put our entire strength to prevent Narendra Modi from becoming the Prime Minister. It is in interest of the country to prevent the BJP from coming to power. If Modi wins, it will give a boost to the communal forces in the country. BSP will make all-out efforts to prevent Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi from becoming the Prime Minister of the country “
This was her recent statement, but in 2002 Mayawati gave clean chit to Modi for riots that happened in Gujarat ,post the incident of Godhra train burning. She even promised to campaign for Modi in Gujarat assembly elections. In a press conference, where then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Modi were present she said, it’s her party’s ‘moral responsibility’ to support the BJP in Gujarat. On the question of riots she said:
“The charges against Modi are baseless, a Chief Minister will never do anything which will bring bad name to his own government.”
That was the time when BJP was supporting BSP in Uttar Pradesh and she was the chief Minister. Modi was a clean man for her at that time and now Modi is the person who is behind the riots.
What are your views about this u turn of Mayawati.
