The man behind burning of Journalist Jagendra Singh – Ram MurtiVerma is a minister of notorious reputation in the Uttar Pradesh Government. Jagendra Singh was allegedly set afire by this minister and five others on 1 June after which he died on 8 June during treatment. He had suffered more than 60% burns to which he finally succumbed.
Singh was a local journalist who used to post news on his page, “शाहजहाँपुर समाचार”. His exposure of Ram Murti Verma’s wrong doings led to a fatal attack on him followed by which he was set on fire alive. This is not the first time that Ram Murti Verma is caught in a criminal case. In May 2014, a woman had accused him of gang raping her by pressurizing her through Station House Officer of Kotwali Police Station. Despite the seriousness of the allegation, no action was taken by UP government against the minister.
Slain Journalist Jagendra Singh had alleged that as Backward Class Welfare Minister, Ram Murti Verma had pocketed a huge amount of money through corruption. He had accused him of building expensive bungalows and financial irregularities. Irked by his allegations, Verma had directed the local police to register a false case of murder, kidnap and theft against Jagendra Singh. Jagendra claimed to have concrete proof of Verma’s wrongdoings that might have provoked Verma to plot his death and silence him forever.
