Both are achievers in their own rights still why is it Nitish vs Modi? Why do Modi and Nitish fight? Here is a forthright analysis of the causes, which may be a reason for the scuffles between Narendra Modi and Nitish Kumar
#1 To begin with Nitish is the chief minister of Bihar and its Bihar, which has given him and his party-JD (U) maximum political clout. In Lok Sabha, it has just 20 MPs while BJP has a total of 114.In Bihar; it’s the junior ally of NDA combine, which is strong with 118 seats in the state assembly of 243 seats. Here BJP has 92 MLAs only. Thus in the current scenario when NDA is not in power at the center, it is BJP which is disadvantageously placed in the state of Bihar. Thus Nitish Kumar has his party strongly behind him in the scuffle with BJP.JD (U) has enough leeway to arm-twist BJP into agreeing to its demands as in case BJP withdraws support from NDA, JD(U) will survive on its own.
#2 Second reason which gives Nitish vs Modi touch of a self-feeding conflict is the fact that JD(U) has rode to power on the backs of Muslims and Most backward classes. Nitish and his party draw a lot of support from minorities whereas Modi is Hindutatva’s poster boy. This conflict has led to polarization on both the sides with Nitish getting support from Muslim minorities in return for some Modi-bashing while Modi finds himself in a peculiar problem where his efforts at being seen as a leader for all by rubbing minorities the right way are being spoiled by Nitish.
#3 Third reason and a major one is high chances of return of NDA combine in 2014 and thus need for a Prime Minister. Modi has effectively so far built upon his development plank and a BJP marred in intraparty rivalries, none so far has been able to challenge Modi’s self-proclaimed lead. There is a strong lobby against him in BJP but thanks to the love he gets from RSS, he can overcome it all if NDA indeed proceeds to victory but Nitish Kumar has come up as a serious challenger to the game plan. Unlike Modi who has done it all, positive press, prime time slots, heated discussions and a sadbhavna fast, Nitish is a silent player who has spoken on all the right occasions of which the latest exchange of words is a part.Nitish has a point as Modi will not be acceptable to all the constituents of NDA, one reason why BJD too abandoned it.Nitish on the other hand has a secular ‘past’ and future but does not have the charisma as Modi has got. Thus the two PM probable have made LS elections a Modi vs Nitish Contest.
#4 Lastly both share just one love-for development. While Modi has made Gujarat most favored with investors with every other MNC wanting to own a piece of land there, Nitish has turned out the fortunes for Bihar by building basic infrastructure and topping it up with high economic growth. While it is something common to them it is also a source of rivalry, comparison and competition.
Modi vs Nitish is an old conflict but it will get intense as Lok Sabha elections approach.
