In the year 1970, the super hit film Purab Aur Paschim starring Manoj Kumar and Saira Banu elevated the level of patriotism of the citizens of India to such a height that till now we feel that we are the only one who is best. We are best is patriotism, we are the only one who is best is jingoism.
Thanks to Indian cinema and our perspective towards the West, we believe with immense pride and patriotism that we are culturally, morally, socially, mentally and physically much more sound than the ‘phirangees’.
We are so obsessed with our ‘glorious’ past, the ‘sone ki chidiya’ phase that we even forget our actual worth today. Human development is in a shabby state and we are now degrading in terms of other economic variables (GDP, FDI, Fiscal deficit and the like) as well. Inspite of all the bitter truths about our human development, human rights and other aspects of our society, we take pseudo-pride in our culture. If honor killing, 18th century patriarchal diktats, depression in city life due to tension between modernity and Indian culture is what you call superior culture and better than west then a serious rethinking is required.
It’s high time we open our eyes, break the shackles of slumber and realise what we actually are by introspecting ourselves on the following aspects of our society;
CULTURALLY AND SOCIALLY:
Ah yes…we know, Kids don’t respect their elders in the West, majority of the couples get divorced as soon as they marry, they have sex with anybody and everybody, the women are shameless and are not virgins when they marry and OMG, they even kiss in public!!!!!
On the other hand, we are so cultured .Our women are so shy and are covered in six yards wonder complete with a veil. Kids don’t marry on their own will (if they dare to, we kill them for the honour of the clan) and we have a very low divorce rate (It is like even if you and your partner don’t see face to face you will still be in the bond for the sake of the society and blame it on your kid!)
And yes, we have systematic killing of female foetus, domestic violence (to keep women from philandering) and other torturous practises. We love to see our females in pain and distress because someone should be a punching bag, someone should take all the blame. We are superb.We do brag about our ‘Unity in Diversity’ and Secularism, but we still have quotas on the basis of castes and religion.We would love to break away into several pieces if we are allowed to do so. That is how tolerant we are of each other.
A person is known by the company he keeps, and a country is known by the leaders it has. I have a strong opinion that we are morally very weak. Leaders of India not only commit scams and crimes, they are shameless enough to defend themselves and retain their position.
We can’t blame them either, we ourselves love to ‘bend’ and break the rules, our leaders are no different. The common man is scared to go to any government department.We are far away from human values and rights. We don’t respect women and children. At any given time, millions of kids are serving us food at the road side dhaba or doing our dishes at home.This list of our unethical and immoral practices is pretty long and inclusive, but not exhaustive so I hope you got the picture clear.
Most researches come from the west; we just give a critical appraisal on them. The Japanese give all the theories on ‘Quality’ in management, we copy and implement them. Scholars in the west have framed a complete discipline of International Relations to satiate their fantasies and what we do. We either copy or criticize them!
Again, we will not hesitate here to brag about our past glory rather than to live in the present and think about our future. Pragmatism eludes us and who gives a heck to follow it back!We are so intelligent that we are scared to experiment and expand our horizons. We are still technologically way behind the others. Yet, our engineers don’t build, but work in banks after getting a management degree. We only mug up and don’t understand.
We are developing so fast that our Human development index rank is 134 out of 195 countries. WOW, WE REALLY ARE AN INTELLIGENT BUNCH.
So, are we really the leaders of the past and the future? or are we just a bunch of self praising hypocrites? Frankly, I find it a confounding question. What do you think?
