CHILDHOOD AND MARRIAGE
Born in a royal Muslim family, Husain was introduced to both modern schooling as well as traditions. She got married at a tender age of 16 and gave birth to a daughter within a year. However, the monotony of her life made her do something more than a housewife.
STEPPING STONE: COSMETOLOGY AND BEAUTY TREATMENTS
It was during her husband’s posting in Iran that she realized her keen interest in beauty and cosmetology. She pursued it with great passion in many leading institutes like Helena Rubinstein, Arnould Taylor, Swarzkopf , Christine Valmy, Lancome and Lean of Copenhagen and supported her education by writing for the Iran Tribune.
She realized that chemical treatments are harmful and have long lasting negative effects. She was thus attracted towards the ancient treasure of Ayurveda.
She came up with many natural Ayurvedic chemical free products for beauty care.She firmly believes in the power of ‘care and cure’ of the nature than chemicals.
THE TURNING POINT-SALOON TO SHAHNAZ HUSAIN HERBAL INC
She started her saloon on a humble budget of Rs 35000/- in Delhi and soon she was booked for 6 months in advance. She stopped advertising her services thereafter as she believed firmly in the word of mouth publicity by satisfied customers.
Turning point came in her career when she was given an opportunity to represent India in London during The Festival Of India in 1980.Her products created a huge stir and soon she captured a huge market there.
Now, her company produces more than 400 different products which have a market in over 138 countries.
Husain expanded her consumer base by entering the retail markets in 1990’s.Her new below Rs 250 range is targeted towards the masses which is a very lucrative market segment. The Shahnaz group has diversified into health resorts, spas as well as low calorie health drinks.
INNOVATION BEYOND PLANET-INTO SPACE
It seems that nothing is unconquerable for Husain. She has recently come up with her innovative products for skin care in space. She has contacted NASA with her product samples for market testing.
Even though she has always been in the limelight for positive reasons, but she still has seen her share of controversies when her only son Sameer Husain died under mysterious circumstances in Patna on January 6, 2008.Rabiya Husain, Sameer ‘s wife lodged a 40 page complaint against Shehnaz charging her for dowry and allegedly blaming her for her son’s death.

- She was awarded Padma Shree in 2006 from President Dr.Abdul Kalam.
- She has been honoured with two prestigious international awards for Quality Excellence and Outstanding Woman Entrepreneur 2002, by Global Quality Management, in London.
- Awarded ‘The 2000 Millennium Medal of Honour’.
- Awarded ‘The Arch of Europe Gold Star Award for Quality’.
- She was awarded the Golden America Award and the Indian Government Awards for Export Excellence.
- She was awarded Success Magazine’s ‘World’s Greatest Woman Entrepreneur’ award in 1996.
