She was born in Kapurthala, Punjab on March 31, 1938 and got married to late Vinod Dikshit, a member of IAS. It was her father-in-law, a freedom fighter and later a Politician of prominence, Late Shri Uma Shankar Dikshit who paved way for her entry in politics. She contested for Kannauj seat in the Lok Sabha elections 1984 and won. She went on to represent India in UN commission on status of women and also served as Union minister of state for Parliamentary affairs and Minister of state in PM’s office during 1986-1989.It was her stint as chief of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee in 1998 and assembly elections that year which made her intrinsic as a Chief Minister to Delhi’s development run from a walled city to almost a world city complete with extensive Metro network, increase in green cover, decrease in pollution levels, reform in DTC and private buses system, power sector reforms and a flyover everywhere there was a need of.Such a long list of good deeds helps making her biography impressive.
She was instrumental in setting up of working women’s hostels in Delhi as chairperson of Young Women’s Association and also courted arrest when she protested for 23 days in 1990 in UP against atrocities committed against women. Inspite of being seen as a symbol of women empowerment, she faced flak when she responded to the murder of Journalist Soumya Vishwanathan with a statement like, “one should not be adventurous”.
All kind of negative attention was on her when Delhi was losing face ahead of incomplete preparations for CWG but inspite of games courting controversies on count of corruption and over-expenses, Sheila Dikshit has come out almost unhurt. While Shunglu committee has pointed finger at her for delay in preparation of infrastructure, she has vowed to come out clean and has strong support from her party.
