* SYRIA STRATEGIC PLAYGROUND FOR US AND RUSSIA
* COST OF MILITARY INTERVENTION IN TERMS OF CIVILIANS’ LIVES
*SOLUTION HAS TO BE INTERNAL, EXTERNAL SOLUTION NOT FEASIBLE
Some analysts are predicting that, if US allies go for a military intervention in Syria it may lead to the third World War. Because Syria like much of the Middle East is not only a state but also a strategic playground for the major powers. In fact, US and Iran have a hostile relationship due to US repeatedly reprimanding Iran for its alleged nuclear weapons program. What is making the matters worse is that Iran and another enemy of US- Lebanon based Hezbollah are helping the current Syrian regime stay in power. So if the rebels don’t win the internal war over the regime, in a sense it is a defeat for US. Thus, US is adamant on securing a favorable solution of the current Syrian turmoil.
We have seen how even before UN specialist’s group left Syria, US secretary of state John Kerry already came to a decision for an air strike in Syria as if they are quiet sure who- regime or rebels- used this chemical weapon. US’s important ally in Iraq and Afghanistan war, United Kingdom couldn’t pass the proposal in its parliament for a military intervention in Syria. Now US has to wait for a while to get new allies. Meanwhile, US destroyers have moved closer to Syria in recent days, and would likely launch cruise missiles against targets associated with the regime’s chemical weapons capability.
Barack Obama has sought a history-defying approval of the strike from US congress which is likely to be difficult to come through. But still, why this war at all? Should not we be questioning the norms which make such intervention at the behest of US possible?
Nobody will believe that, US is the saviour of the people all over the world yet what they do, they do for the sake of their own interest. And for this interest, from the beginning of the Syrian crisis, they were helping the rebellions. These rebellions are not different in ideology from the very people US has been fighting in Afghanistan and worldwide in the name of war on terror.
Due to geopolitics of Middle East and to keep control over the oil resources and the existing pipelines, it is important for US to maintain its presence in the Middle East. So under the veil of humanitarian agenda, US’s main focus is to get favours from the unstable Middle East.
At the same time, the Bashar-Al-Assad regime’s cruelty and his intolerant position towards the people of Syria is nothing short of war crimes. In any case of war crime, the world community can’t act as a silent spectator. And whoever used these chemical weapons and killed children and innocent civilians should be punished heavily.
But can the world community help Syrian people in reinstalling peace by waging war against the regime in Syria? There is no doubt that, US military action could lead to even more civilian casualties and the displacement of families from their homes. There is a greater chance of worsening the situation as there are close connections between the rebellions and potentially dangerous al-Qaeda. In addition, it is already mentioned that, Syrian government is not alone at all in the global political arena. Indeed, two major powers China and Russia have already shown their concerns towards regime over US military involvement in Syria.
Why the world community is so worried about the Syrian issue? More than all the political equations, concern towards the lives of innocent Syrians is most genuine.
If the impact and opportunity cost of military intervention can’t be assessed accurately, how can we support such an action which might make the situation in Syria even more difficult? If the so called western ‘world community’ is so powerful and emotional regarding humanity (!) why can’t it choose a path which is less atrocious?
If we are really concerned about the people of Syria, we have to find out a way in which we can save the highest number of lives and use the lowest numbers of weapons. A comprehensive approach is needed, which takes into account the underlying reality and works for achieving a ceasefire between the rebels and regime utilizing the UN. At the same time, let the Syrian people solve their own problem while the world community can help them through strong diplomacy to restore the situation. Because any solution which will come from outside is not sustainable.
