It is believed to be comprised of Bhumihars Brahmins. Now who are Bhumihar Brahmins? They are simply a sub caste of brahmins in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, UP and certain parts of MP who own land and operate as landlords.
It came into existence to counter the influence of naxalites in central Bihar. They are inspired from a late 19th century mythical figure- Ranvir Baba who as a Bhumihar countered the dominating effect of Rajputs in Bhojpur. Bhojpur is a district in Bihar, which has Arrah as its administrative headquarter. Ranvir Sena had Brahmeshwar Singh Mukhiya as its founder-chief, who was killed on 1st June 2012 by unidentified people in Arrah. This has led to a violent backlash by his supporters.
Ranvir Sena was found mainly to counter the activities of Naxals and communists (CPI ML) in Bihar.Naxals comprise landless laborers belonging to scheduled caste and scheduled tribes who inspired by the Maoist revolution, wage violent war against the upper caste landowners and aim to overthrow the state which has not done anything for their development. Cadres of CPI (ML) is also a target of violence by Ranvir Sena as CPI (ML) identifies with the ideology of Marx and Lenin and aims to wage a revolution against the capitalist class. Ranvir Sena was banned in 1995.
