What is the connection between Bangalore Exodus and Assam Riots? Why are people from North East fleeing Bangalore, Madurai, Coimbatore and now even Chennai? The reason for such exodus is rumour mills which are active through messages, social networking websites and word of mouth. According to the rumours, Muslims in these places will avenge the death of people of their religion who have been killed in Assam riots and in clashes in the month of June in Myanmar between Rakhine Buddhists and Muslim Rohingyas. Messages are circulating in these cities where a strong warning and in some cases even advice is given to the person with the text claiming that people from real people from Assam have actually been targetted. According to such baseless messages and pages on Facebook, 20 August is the deadline for North Easterners to flee these cities and go back to their ‘own’ states. This has led to a mass exodus of North Easterners from these cities with trains bound for Assam witnessing a lethal rush.
This is absolutely a grave injustice on the part of people from North East as this time they are facing one of the worst discrimination for their mongoloid features. People behind these warnings have a serious misconception that anyone who has mongoloid facial features is from the same place. Thus people from North East are being targeted for violence against Muslims in Myanmar. Also killings of Muslims in Assam are being attributed to the entire state of Assam which is nothing but a reflection of how narrow minded one can be! Violence by one community against the other is not as coherent as we would want to think. In reality, it’s just radical or motivated elements of one community fighting with equally radical and motivated elements of the other.
Exodus at such scale of people of the same country speaks volume of where our country is going right now. Unity is in threat and it is time we take this seriously.
