Reason: Why Gutka banned in Delhi

In case you are wondering why gutka has been banned in Delhi, don’t think its because of Delhi Government which cares a great deal about the health of the people. However often Delhi’s health minister and Chief Minister Sheila Dixit may be claiming the ban as a step by the government in the interest of the people’s health, truth is gutka has been banned in Delhi only due to a PIL filed by an organization, Doctors For You which comprises doctors, medical students and like minded people.Reportedly due to an increase in cases of oral and lung cancer in Delhi, DFY filed a Public Interest Litigation in the Delhi High Court.PIL also quoted a World Health Organization report which said around 25% of people in Delhi consume tobacco in some form. When the case came up for hearing, Delhi High Court gave the government two weeks time to decide on the plea to which government responded positively by effecting a ban on gutka.Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Haryana, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Goa are the other states which have banned gutka sale.
