#1 US spies have intercepted phones of at least 35 head of the governments around the world. Yesterday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel had confronted US President Barack Obama over US tapping of her personal mobile phone. This disclosure comes in a new document given to The Guardian by Edward Snowden. The names of these 35 world leaders have not been mentioned in the document but they are reportedly allies of the US who maintain close ties with the country as against isolated ones such as Iran and North Korea.
#2 Indian PM Manmohan Singh has expressed disappointment over Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif’s failure to keep the promise he made to him in New York. Singh had met Sharif on the sidelines of UN General Assembly and Sharif had promised to keep the LoC ceasefire intact. After their meeting in late September, LoC ceasefire violations have instead increased and thus PM Manmohan Singh has said that he is deeply disappointed.
#3 Chinese politician Bo Xilai, one of the 25 most powerful Communist Party officials will have to serve a life sentence for corruption and abuse of power. He took bribe amounting to $ 3.3 m and used his position to cover up his wife’s crime. His wife had murdered a British businessman over a financial dispute. Bo has been an important politician with bright chances of going all the way to top.
#4 Sri Lankan government has refused to react to Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution. A resolution was passed in TN state assembly calling for a total boycott of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Colombo. Sri Lanka says that the resolution is India’s internal matter. The resolution firmly backed by AIADMK government also asked for temporary suspension of Sri Lanka from the CHOGM until it grants equal status to Tamils residing in the country.
#5 Several religious groups including Sikhs have asked for US Justice Department’s intervention in discriminatory surveillance of Muslims by the New York Police Department. They have questioned the ‘Radicalization Theory’ published by NYPD which says “Muslim religious belief, practices, and community engagement are grounds for law enforcement scrutiny”. This is a case of racial profiling of Muslims which flouts international norms against racism.
